Win Over Piner End Pre-Season on High Note

Ground Game & Defense Highlight Blowout

Galileo V 28 12 40
Piner V 07 00 07

An improved offensive line from their loss to Hercules a week ago set the tone as Galileo rushed their way to 4 touchdowns in a blowout victory against the visiting Prospectors. Sophomore running back, Yarvell Smith continued to shine for the Lions with three scores on the ground (60, 25, 1) and one through the air, a 54-yard catch and run from QB, Adrian Poot. Juniors, Ronald Fox and Jimmie Edwards were also recipients of good blocking that helped them get into the end zone.

2017 ROSTERS

No longer pretenders, Galileo is muscling up in 2017 to compete for a city championship. The offense will feature AAA RB of the Year, Yarvell Smith, along with all-city WR, Jackie Guo and second year starter at QB, Adrian Poot. Defensive keys will be linebackers, Antonio McBride and Erasmo Rivas along with defensive ends, Jeremiah Horne and Johan Lacayo. Junior transfer, Jimmie Edwards will be a boost for the defense at MLB.

Galileo will be visited Hercules (3-0) on Friday September 8, 2017 for their first away match of the season. The frosh soph team kicked off at 4:30pm and the varsity nightcap at 7pm.

Four Turnovers Doom Lions at Hercules

Hercules V 20 00 20

Under the lights in a cool night at Hercules High, Galileo became a victim of it’s own undoing by reverting into last season’s turnover-prone squad. The Titans were able to capitalize on a blocked punt returned for a score and on the first of back-to-back series ending interceptions.

Despite Heat, Lions Win Season Openers

Galileo kicked off the 2017 campaign with a double-header at home against San Lorenzo (1-0) from across the Bay. The frosh soph 11am game-time temperature was already at 75 degrees and the varsity headliner at 2pm on Saturday, September 2nd at the George White Field were at a blistering 90-plus degrees.

Coaching Staff 2017

In his 5th season at Galileo, Marcus Blacksher Jr. has been promoted to associate head coach of the varsity team. His main role will be coordinating the varsity offense and working with player’s academic progress. Stephen Carton benefited from the change, gaining the role of frosh soph head coach for this season. Coach Mark Huynh will make a return to coordinating the varsity defense and retain the role of coordinating special teams for both squads. After two years of “light” recruitment from Coach Mark, Galileo history teacher, Daniel Lynch is finally making his coaching debut as an assistant coach.

SPRING BALL 2017

GALILEO-DECAL-2016-cartoonsm
Galileo’s 2017 Spring Ball season is currently in session. With major offensive weapons returning from a high scoring 2016 season, the Lions are ready to light up the scoreboard at the spring game. Returning QB, Adrian Poot will be a force with his ability to spread the ball around. The 2016 AAA Running Back of the Year, Yarvell Smith will look to show the world what he can do as a sophomore next season but until then he is going to be a huge problem for Galileo’s defense in the spring game. Smith, a more than capable linebacker, will also get on the other side of the ball more this upcoming season. Other key offensive weapons to lookout for are sure-handed wideouts Jackie Guo and Erasmo Rivas. The biggest unknown for Galileo will be how it’s offensive line will respond from losing three seniors: it’s line is hinging on three rookie big boys; Thomas Santos, Eric Larreynaga, and Max Miles. Defensively, with the departure of all-city players; Connor Chavela (MLB), Demaje Ardis (OLB), and Miles Mainini (DE), the Lions will feature upcoming juniors, Ronald Fox (FS), Antonio McBride (MLB), and Johan Lacayo (DE/LB).
