Following a win in their season-opener at Mills, Galileo allowed their next 3 opponents an average of 47 points per game while putting up a mediocre 23 points-per-game on offense. Without a doubt, the AAA defending champs were looking for answers as they visited the Burton Pumas in their league-opener.

However, things didn’t start well as Quincy Nelson fumbled on the second snap of the game, giving the Pumas the ball in Lions’ territory. Galileo’s defense, behind Linebackers, Max Malloy and Young Ene, would set the tone early to help the lions regain the ball-sophomore defensive end, Mark Pineda recovered a Pumas fumble a few plays later. Then the offense woke up as Nelson made up for his error by helping the lions march down the field with his first touchdown of four. Nelson went over 200 yards in the 4-score effort while quarterback, Jonathan Lu threw a 30-yard strike to Waynelle Buckner and posted another highlight with a 75-yard score on a QB sneak.

Statistically, the defensive backs unit dominated with a combined total of; 11 solo tackles-2 for a loss, 5 assists, 4 pass defend, and 1 interception. William Kay finished with 6 tackles, 2 pass defends and 2 tackles for a loss. Waynelle Buckner added 4 tackles, 3 assists, and 1 pass defend. Wesley Choy round out the crew with 3 tackles and an interception.

Malloy recorded 2 solo tackles and 4 assists before leaving the game in the third quarter with an ACL tear while blocking in the trenches. His counterpart on the strong side, Young Ene finished with 4 tackles and a sack.
