Coaching Staff 2018

2018 Coaching Staff Leaning on State Experience

After a state championship run, Galileo’s coaching staff made significant gains despite the sad departure of 3-year coach, Stephen Carton who moved up to Seattle to enjoy the year-round rain. Coach Mark Huynh will be leading this program for a 10th season, a decade that produced 3 city championships, last season’s 6A state title and a hopeful run again this season. Coach Blacksher will be back to coordinate the Lions’ offense and take on more head coaching duties. Coach Lynch is asked to leap into the fire as the frosh soph head coach in his second year.

2017 Coaching Staff is a 4-Man Show

In his 5th season at Galileo, Marcus Blacksher Jr. has been promoted to associate head coach of the varsity team. His main role will be coordinating the varsity offense and working with player’s academic progress. Stephen Carton benefited from the change, gaining the role of frosh soph head coach for this season. Coach Mark Huynh will make a return to coordinating the varsity defense and retain the role of coordinating special teams for both squads. After two years of “light” recruitment from Coach Mark, Galileo history teacher, Daniel Lynch is finally making his coaching debut as an assistant coach.

Coaching Staff 2013

2013 Coaching Staff Not Under One Umbrella

The 2013 season will point the program back to a more traditional style of coaching with 2 separate coaching staffs. While the 2012 staff returns for another season (with 1 change – Donovan Phillips in place of Jackie Phung), coaches Espy and Hardee are first year coaches at Galileo with the frosh soph team. This change was a mandate from the administration citing a “lack of diversity” and “lack of experience” with the prior season’s coaching staff. Coach Mark Huynh’s staff will continue to coach the varsity team.

2011 Coaching Staff Making Changes

The 2011 coaching staff did not retain Dominic Mullens and Charlie Kaine from 2010 due to a conflict in job scheduling. Coach Ben Moore returns in a 75% capacity after a time-challenging 2010 season. Coach Steve Santoro, who played at Yale, brings an east coast experience. Coach Saepate Vasa who grew up in chinatown and  attended Galileo his freshman year, is in a semi-homecoming although he graduated from Rodriguez High in Fairfield. In addition, coaches Israel Jones round out a 6-man staff.

2010 Coaching Staff Running on Championship Fuel

Retaining 3 coaches from last season, the 2010 staff’s addition of Charlie Kaine and Donovan Phillips was enough to sustain the program’s competitive edge as the frosh/soph team came 1 touchdown shy of a championship and the varsity team, as well, was 1 touchdown away from a return trip to the championship despite losing AAA Running Back of the Year, Quincy Nelson, to an MCL tear with 3 games remaining and starting center and the heart of the lions’ defense, Max Malloy in the first game of the regular season.

2009 Coaching Staff Making History

The 2009 staff, a truly multi-culturally well-rounded bunch, blessed with 40 hard-working players, helped Galileo reclaim it’s reputation as a football powerhouse in San Francisco by winning it’s 16th city championship, the most in city history. Most notably, the championship came on the heels of an 18-game losing streak.
