PURPLE vs ORANGE SPRING GAME 2014
MANALANG SCORES TWICE IN PURPLE VICTORY
In the Purple vs Orange Spring Game, senior defensive tackle, Matt Fronda, despite not playing in a game since his freshman season, showed his dominance on defense for the Orange-Fronda played the roll of the “Terminator” with a habit of being around the ball to make tackle after tackle. Fronda capped off a career day with an unlikely INT which doesn’t happen every day for DT’s. The Orange also included Galileo’s #1 defensive player in third year starter at middle linebacker, Jamari Hilliard-Vasquez. This time around, JHV’s offensive play was slightly more impressive because he was never called upon to play the “O” in the last 2 seasons due to another fella named Fox.
The Purple received a pleasant surprise from senior tightend/defensive end, Justin Manalang who turned out to be the “equalizer”. Like Fronda, Manalang who was injured all of last season, is also looking to leave a mark in a final campaign. Manalang hauled in a touchdown catch&run and more impressively, snagged a pick-6 INT. “I wasn’t surprised about Justin’s good read and the pick but with 50 yards to run, I thought he’d be caught from behind,” coach Mark. Needless to say, Manalang’s 2-way performance earned him the Player of the Game honor.
Down 22–12 with 6 minutes remaining, Phillip Tran threw a dart to Gary Zhou to pull the Orange closer. Then a trick-play gone silly left Nick Foster’s half-back pass on the grass with a 22–18 score. The Orange defense held firm to regain the ball but nothing –doing as Victor Ortiz sacked Tran on first down. JHV’s halfback pass turned into an incomplete jumpshot. Tran would connect with JHV for 10 yards on third down before JHV’s second attempt at the halfback pass routine turned out as futile as the first. The Purple took a knee to make it a 4–0-1 record in their favor spanning a 5-year tilt.
