No longer pretenders, Galileo is muscling up in 2017 to compete for a city championship. The offense will feature AAA RB of the Year, Yarvell Smith, along with all-city WR, Jackie Guo and second year starter at QB, Adrian Poot. Defensive keys will be linebackers, Antonio McBride and Erasmo Rivas along with defensive ends, Jeremiah Horne and Johan Lacayo. Junior transfer, Jimmie Edwards will be a boost for the defense at MLB.
The 2016 season will have the varsity Lions looking from the bottom up after a disastrous 1-9 2015 campaign. Leading the way will be a few key seniors; Connor Chavela (MLB), Donovan Hasson (WR/DB), all-city duos Kenneth Grady (DE/RB) and Miles Mainini (TE/DE), and Demaje Ardis (LB/TE). Key juniors who will contribute are; Ahmed Balwi (C/DT), Erasmo Rivas (WR/FS), Antonio Lewis (RB/CB), Jackie Guo (WR/DE), and starting QB, Adrian Poot.
All-city fullback, Ethan Nelson will have his hands full leading a group of young players. He will get help from fellow senior 4-year players; Brandon Wong and Jason Yu. This Junior and sophomore heavy roster features a few talented players who will need to grow up in a hurry; feature RB Markell Vilce (11), second year CB Donovan Hasson (11), QB Demaje Ardis (11), DE Kenneth Grady (11), TE Miles Mainini (11), sophomore OL’s Ahmed Balwi and Andy Ix, and sophomore cornerbacks, Antonio Lewis and Kingsley Mai.
The Galileo Lions, graduating 20+ seniors in their 2013 championship season, will lean heavily on 3-year starter, Jamari Hilliard-Vasquez to anchor the defense at middle backer. Offensively, senior QB, Phillip Tran and wide-out, Rodney Morgan look to put points on the board. The run game, on the legs of another senior, Nick Foster might take some time to develop behind a brand new offensive line-all first year starters. Sophomore DB, Donovan Hasson moved up to start at cornerback as the lone sophomore to occupy a starting spot.
It’s now-or-never for the class of 2014 who has gone from no playoffs in their sophomore varsity season to losing last year in the first round and now, looking for redemption and their place in Galileo football history, will be chasing that Turkey Day brunch meeting at Kezar.
As of October 2012.
Varsity Roster 2012
- Acosta, Nestor (#54 5’8″ 205 Sr. G/DT)
- Armstrong, Isaac (#80 6’1″ 175 Jr. WR/DE)
The 2011 varsity roster includes 12 sophomores, 7 juniors, and 10 seniors. After graduating 20 plus seniors in each of the last 2 seasons, Galileo looks to gain experience this season while making a push for the playoffs. Sophomores highlight the “glamorous” positions; Kyle nelson (QB), Ronzel Fox (FB/LB), Dontell Jackson (RB/DB). The juniors looking to put a stamp on defense are Nick Toy (DT) and Nestor Acosta (NT). Seniors, Anthony Lam and Edward Luu have been wonderful surprises as leaders.
The 2010 Varsity Squad features 2009’s AAA Running Back of the Year, Quincy Nelson and defensive standout, Max Malloy. With a young line, senior quarterback, Jonathan Lu, will rely on Nelson to make plays and receivers, Waynelle Buckner and Erik Wilson to stretch the defense. William Kay, Wesley Choy and Robbie Trumbo round out a deep defensive back field.
The 2009 Varsity Roster features returning senior quarterback, Dylan Nelson who led Galileo to a frosh/soph title in 2007 as a sophomore. Nelson is flanked by feature back, Quincy Nelson (junior), and full back, Patisela Ale (senior). Center, Shaun Numera will anchor the lions’ offense and their defense at defensive tackle and middle linebacker. Chuck Jones and Paul Hill will back up the defensive line as linebackers.
