09 League Play: Balboa Varsity
Lions Rout Bucs in Complete Game
Galileo V 14-18 32
Balboa V 7-8 15
October 3, 2009 @ Balboa Stadium_If Galileo felt nervous or unsure of where they stack up in the AAA, they sure didn’t show it as they open league play with a dominant victory over Balboa. The 17-point win not only celebrates the Lions first win in league play in nearly 3 years but it proved that Galileo is back on the right track to competitive football. Galileo posted an 0-12 record in the last two seasons and 1-19 spanning three seasons.
Galileo’s defensive unit held Balboa’s west coast passing game in check in the first half but faltered enough within the last minute to give the Bucs a little life, a pass to the deep part of the endzone just over Galileo fingertips pulled Balboa within a touchdown, 7-14. The second half opened with a dagger when senior linebacker, Paul Hill picked off a Balboa pass and returned it 35 yards for a score. Wtih the score 20-7, Galileo’s offense stepped it up with 2 more touchdowns behind running back, Quincy Nelson and quarterback, Dylan Nelson’s spectacular runs.
Junior QB reserve, Jon Lu, in relief of Nelson, took the first snap into the endzone but a flag nullified his good run. Galileo had 3 touchdowns called back by penalty and 1 by an inadvertent whistle. Balboa scored late but was unable to come up with the on-side kick.
Next stop: Marshall (0-1, 1-3) at home, Saturday 10/10/09, Kick Off Time is 12:45.
